Description To Books How Far to Bethlehem?

Norah Lofts remarkable novel retells the story of the Nativity from the Annunciation to the Birth of Christ, and in it she has sought to reveal the motives and emotions of the characters as they converged on the humble stable in Bethlehem. With immense care and a superb sense of history she has re-created this most wonderful of tales with compassion, understanding, freshness and faith. It opens in Nazareth where Mary, who has been visited by the Angel Gabriel, prepared for her forthcoming marriage to Joseph and shows with astonishing clarity the fears and joys she felt as she learned of her appointed task. The author has combined all her talents as historian, psychologist and writer to produce a novel which is scholarly, moving and intensely readable.

Column About Books How Far to Bethlehem?
I read this book every Christmas. It is a moving story of the Three Wisemen and their search for Jesus.

Good fictional accountNot Biblically accurate, but an interesting take on the characters and events leading up to Christs birth. Some typos, but not so many to be distracting.

I loved this book! While the story of the three wisemen's journey to Bethlehem is a familiar one, in this story we are treated to the author's imagination and to the history she has woven for all those involved in Jesus' birth. I loved the detail and I loved the way in which I could relate to everyone who, in their own way, was invested in what was about to happen in Bethlehem.

I really enjoyed this fictionalized account of the the first Christmas. It seemed well-researched and I enjoyed the subtle foreshadowing of character interactions (Barabas, Mary, Martha, Lazarus, etc.). At times I did get bogged down with details which seemed to slow the story for me, hence the 4-star rating.

Meh.I had a hard time getting into this book. It caught my interest as the book club at the local library was going to read it. I had thoughts of reading in time for the book club but didn't (and didn't attend what would have been my first meeting) - now I wished I had because I need to vent a bit about this book. My particular copy was filled with typos that are more than just printing errors to be sure. That dampened the experience. I think Lofts belabors certain points and scenes which causes

Such a sweet tale providing a narrative filling in the blanks pre and post Jesus's birth.

Literary tapestryA wonderful job of weaving the lives of all the individuals involved from Jesus' conception to his Nativity into a story that has the touch of a historical novel. Truly enjoyable.
