Dreamcatcher (2001) is a novel, by American writer Stephen King, featuring elements of body horror, suspense and alien invasion. The book, written in cursive, helped the author recuperate from a 1999 car accident, and was completed in half a year.

Set near the fictional town of Derry, Maine, Dreamcatcher is the story of four lifelong friends: Gary "Jonesy" Jones, Pete Moore, Joe "Beaver" Clarendon and Henry Devlin. As young teenagers, the four saved Douglas "Duddits" Cavell, an older boy with Down syndrome, from a group of sadistic bullies. From their new friendship with Duddits, Jonesy, Beaver, Henry and Pete began to share the boy's unusual powers, including telepathy, shared dreaming, and seeing "the line", a psychic trace left by the movement of human beings.

Jonesy, Beaver, Henry and Pete reunite for their annual hunting trip at the Hole-in-the-Wall, an isolated lodge in the Jefferson Tract. There, they become caught between an alien invasion and an insane US Army Colonel, Abraham Kurtz. Jonesy and Beaver, who remain at the cabin while Henry and Pete go out for supplies, encounter Richard McCarthy, a disoriented and delirious stranger wandering near the lodge during a blizzard talking about lights in the sky. The victim of an alien abduction, McCarthy grows sicker and dies while sitting on the toilet. An extraterrestrial parasite eats its way out of his body and attacks the two men, killing Beaver. Jonesy inhales the spores of the strange reddish fungus that the stranger and his parasite have spread around the cabin, and an alien entity ("Mr. Gray") takes over his mind.

I've put off writing a review because Becky wrote the review to end all reviews and said it all! It's my resolution to review all the books I read this year so I have to make the attempt. Here goes...I read this the week it first came out in 2001 because I always read his books as soon as they come out. At breakneck speed more often than not. I tend to re-read and savor the books later, but the first reading is like a "fix" I have been Jonesing for, so taking my time is not really an option. I

Ree-damn-diculous. Aliens bursting from butts. Frothing military maniacs. A Magic Retard (Stephen King's go-to character when the Magic Negro is busy). Ludicrous, labored faux-blue-collar dialogue. And farts. Constant, neverending, rancid, moist farts. This may be the stupidest book King has ever written, and that's saying something. And yet ... I was pretty wary when I started this book. I read The Tommyknockers a few years back, and I felt kinda "meh" about it. I've never been big on "alien" stories. I've heard some people describe Dreamcatcher as a blend between The Tommyknockers and IT, and now having finished, I have to say that's a pretty accurate description. I was also a little nervous because I've heard people say that Stephen King's newer stuff just isn't up to par with his older classics like IT or The Shining. I shouldn't

Although Stephen King novels/short stories are currently experiencing a big screen revival some of the earlier efforts are still pretty poor. The likes of Thinner, The Stand and the Nightmares & Dreamscapes TV series did not transfer well. I made the mistake of watching the film version of Dreamcatcher before reading the novel and for years, whilst browsing the shelves of second hand book stores and charity shops, my eyes would register the presence of Dreamcatcher but i never considered

Aliens attack Maine, a homicidal poop is trapped in a toilet, and one of the characters uses his shoe as a telephone. That's about all I remember from "Dreamcatcher", not one of Stephen King's finest, I daresay. Still, I remember enjoying it, years ago when I first read it. I vaguely recall the mediocre movie, too, which featured a stellar cast including Morgan Freeman, Thomas Jane, Timothy Oliphant, and Tom Sizemore. One of the weirdest alien invasion stories I've ever read.

For all those people who call this a shitweasle of a novel, I would like like point out that it does exactly what it sets out to do. Maybe the usual King fan comes to the chopping block expecting nothing but detailed flawed characters and some rather heartwrenching stuff before a paranormal beastie chomps down.But I would like to posit that SK IS a fan of Science Fiction. :) Sure, a few of his SF tales like Lawnmower Man and Tommyknockers might not get the love that they deserve, but remember,

I've got good news and bad news. The good news is, Dreamcatcher is not just a rehash of It. The bad news is it's a rehash of The Tommyknockers, too, which is perhaps my least favorite of all of King's works.All right, maybe that's not quite fair. Dreamcatcher does involve aliens, a secret in the woods, and telepathy, but it's not exactly a carbon copy of The Tommyknockers. It re-uses pieces of many of King's works. There's the "adults who bonded as children and did a great thing" theme from It.
