Explanation To Books Calamity Jack (Rapunzel's Revenge #2)
Jack likes to think of himself as a criminal mastermind...with an unfortunate amount of bad luck. A schemer, plotter, planner, trickster, swindler...maybe even thief? One fine day Jack picks a target a little more giant than the usual, and one little bean turns into a great big building-destroying beanstalk. With help from Rapunzel (and her trusty braids), a pixie from Jack's past, and a man with inventions from the future, they just might out-swindle the evil giants and put his beloved city back in the hands of good people ....while catapulting themselves and readers into another fantastical adventure.

I was bummed that I liked this so much less than Rapunzel's Revenge, its prequel. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the steampunk-y visuals, but found the narrative a little jumbled and hard to get into and the characters far less enticing than in the first book. (For what it's worth, the actual demo -- Josie, age 8 when she read it -- sez the same.) But if your kid hasn't read Rapunzel's Revenge, HIE THYSELF to the bookstore or library. Funny, feminist and I bet appealing to boys as well as girls. I'mJack brings Rapunzel to the city, where he hopes to impress her with this city sophistication and help restore his mother's bakery. But nothing goes according to plan when mysterious ant people attack the city, and the giants take over the police force!Another rollickly adventure full of magic and hilarious dialogue! I love the continuing romance and friendship between Jack and Rapunzel, as well as the addition of various supporting characters. The colorful illustrations, the fast paced
A really cute, surprisingly insightful sequel to Rapunzel's Revenge. I love the series: the plot's complicated, the art's amazing, and I just love the concept and worldbuilding.

I had the pleasure of reading Rapunzel's Revenge for the 2008 Cybils. Shortly after the Cybils ended, Nathan Hale, the illustrator, posted sketches of the sequel, Calamity Jack. Thus began my year long obsession of waiting for the sequel. On page 50 of Rapunzel's Revenge Jack gives a quick explanation of why he's hiding out in the badlands of Gothel's Reach. It's a throw away line, two sentences long. Calamity Jack fills in the blanks of that story as Jack and Rapunzel travel to the city to set
I loved Rapunzels Revenge, so I figured I would love Calamity Jack as well. In the end, I did, but it was a slow start. Jack is a bit of a con artist, and is not really very likable, when we first meet him. However, he grows on you, and once things started clicking, I was cheating for him just as much as Rapunzel was.Still set in the odd sort of Western time, with ogres and giants and fun stuff like that.If you can get past Jacks backstory, and see his heart, you will like this second book.
I actually liked this better than the first one! I love the character of Jack, and really enjoyed finding out his backstory. The jabberwocky and the bandersnatch were great, too!
