Den unge bondesøn Mikkel Thøgersen kommer til København for at studere i begyndelsen af 1500-tallet. Her ser han Christian II, hvis liv han kommer til at følge på tætteste hold.

Kongens Fald udkom i tre dele i årene 1900-01. Første del, Forårets død, foregår fra år 1497 til 1500. Anden del, Den store sommer, starter tyve år efter i 1520 og strækker sig til år 1523 hvor kongen bliver afsat. Tredje del, Vinteren, foregår 12 år efter, år 1535. De danner årets ring og samtidig tre faser af Mikkels liv.

Både Politikens og Berlingskes læsere kårede i 1999 Kongens Fald til det 20. århundredes bedste roman.

Nobel Prize ProjectYear: 1944Winner: Johannes V. JensenReview: This was so incredibly Scandinavian that it makes me really happy. Incredibly spare and dark, most of the action taking place off the pages, with an insanely pathetic narrator. It's like a novelization of a Bergman film, I love it. In all seriousness, the poetic, lyrical nature of the prose contrasted with the spareness and simplicity of the storytelling makes for a unique reading experience. Verdict: This was a genuinely great book.

By incident "Kongens Fald" was mentioned on Danish radio. A classic, provoking a fine airtime there. I considered the book, bought it, read it, and was gladly surprised. This is how a book support a Nobel Prize winner in succeeding, a masterpiece.

A very well written book. It was a pleasure to read it, though I find myself far away from those times it talks about or it was written in. However, Jensen have outgone time.
