Book 9 and I still love this series. Steven Erickson adapted a different method here, instead of his usual, that a book ends with all strings tied, this ended in a cliffhanger, the worst kind so prepare yourselves, this has a few new characters, apart from those almost everyone that survive the first 8 books are in this and the rest will be in The Crippled God cause this book is the first part of the conclusion to the series. I still don't know who is alive or who is dead cause the book ended
Another gripping instalment of the series. There was heartache, horror, despair, hope and many a gut-wrenching scene. Erikson maintains his mastery of this series and the vast array of characters. Many characters met their demise in this one and when the dust is settled it will be interesting who is still standing. After all sometimes in this series dead doesn't mean completely gone. I can't wait to read the final book.
I have often commented that the Malazan series is the very epitome of Epic Fantasy (yes, the capital letters are necessary). It encompasses far flung realms, myriad powerful entities with competing agendas, deep history spanning thousands of years, gods, empires, and fanatics. Every new book introduced several dozen new characters to keep track of, revealed more of the complex history that impacts the events, and a bunch of new cultures to experience. Re-read. Even better the second time. I even enjoyed the Snake this time around seeing so many more nuances in it's telling. Rankings this time followed by the first read. 1, 3, TBH2, 2, MOI3, 1, DHG4, 6 DOD5, 9, TTH6, 4, MT7, 5 GotM8, 8 HoC9, 7 RGI know I'm in the minority but I simply love this one.
