Bengali Science Fiction at its best. Created by the literary genius Satyajit Ray, Professor Shonku is primarily an inventor rather than a scientist engaged in a specific field (much like Edison). He is quite a prodigy, having a double honours in Physicss and Chemistry, and being able to fluently converse in 69 languages. Yet the man within is quite like any other middle class erudite Bengali. He lives with his 24 year old cat Newton, and a forgetful man-servant, Prahlad. With his inventions, heIt really amezing
These are classics that had helped shape my childhood, firing the imagination as well as providing a superb escape from the everyday relaities of grumpy school-teachers, problematic domestic life, neighbourhood bullies etc. The adventures are superb examples of Ray's unique brand of story-telling, combining mystery, science (improbable, but tremendoulsy attractive to young minds), horror, and suspense. But the publishers could have easily annotated this collection to enable us to appreciate the
Once you start you can't stop it. It's unputdownable.
Fit to rival the greatest sci-fi fiction in the English Language, it is a pity that the few translations fail to do justice to the original Bengali prose.
The only science fiction I have ever read which seemed more realistic than others is this book. Truly magnificent.
